INDIA Bloc Faces Uncertainty as Rahul Gandhi’s Claim and Tamil Nadu Realignments Trigger Opposition Turbulence

Rahul Gandhi’s assertion that only Congress can defeat the BJP, combined with shifting alliances in Tamil Nadu, Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh, signals deep fractures within the INDIA bloc. DMK’s break, TMC’s defeat, and emerging realignments highlight a turbulent phase in India’s opposition politics ahead of future elections.

The political opposition landscape in India entered a phase of heightened uncertainty after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asserted in a social media video that only the Congress party possesses the capability to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while parallel political realignments in Tamil Nadu and other states exposed widening cracks within the INDIA bloc.

In a video message posted on his social media handle on Friday evening, Rahul Gandhi made a direct and emphatic assertion, stating that no other political party can defeat the BJP and Narendra Modi, adding that only the Congress can achieve this objective. He reinforced his message by urging supporters to “take it in writing,” framing the Congress as the sole credible challenger to the ruling party.

At the same time, actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay entered Lok Bhavan in Chennai carrying letters of support from the Congress and other parties, seeking to secure the majority required to form a government in Tamil Nadu after falling just short of the required numbers in the May 4 election results. The Congress endorsement, while numerically limited, carried broader political implications as it marked a significant shift away from its long-standing alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

The Tamil Nadu electoral outcome had already reshaped the state’s political balance, with Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam securing 108 seats, while both the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the AIADMK-BJP National Democratic Alliance lagged behind. The Congress’s decision to extend support to Vijay was interpreted as a strategic move to align with a rising political force, while simultaneously distancing itself from the DMK.

This development triggered sharp reactions from the DMK, which described the Congress’s move as a major betrayal. The DMK legislature party passed a formal resolution highlighting that the Congress had previously been allocated one Rajya Sabha seat and 28 assembly constituencies under the alliance arrangement. Senior DMK leader TKS Elangovan declared that the INDIA bloc had effectively ended and stated that the party would restructure its alliances accordingly.

DMK leader Kanimozhi escalated the matter further by writing to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, requesting that DMK Members of Parliament be seated separately from the Congress benches, signalling an institutional breakdown in parliamentary coordination between the two parties.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav intensified the political discourse after meeting both Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata and MK Stalin in Chennai. Posting images from his meetings on social media, he remarked that his party was not among those who abandon allies in difficult times. Kanimozhi responded by expressing appreciation for his remarks, underscoring the growing complexity of opposition relations.

In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee faced a separate political upheaval after the BJP secured a decisive victory with 202 seats, ending her 15-year tenure in the state. She alleged that the electoral mandate had been compromised through manipulation of voter rolls under the Special Intensive Revision process. Despite the defeat, Mamata Banerjee adopted a conciliatory tone towards the INDIA bloc, acknowledging support from Congress, the Samajwadi Party, and others. She also stated that senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi had contacted her following the results and described herself as a “free bird” prepared to continue opposing the BJP-led government.

However, tensions between Congress and the Trinamool Congress remain historically complex, with both parties contesting separately in Bengal during the 2024 general elections while continuing selective cooperation in Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi, in a separate statement, criticised those within the opposition who were celebrating the Trinamool Congress defeat, arguing that the loss in Assam and Bengal represented a broader threat to democratic institutions. He urged political unity, stating that the issue transcended party interests and concerned the future of the country.

In his most recent video statement, Rahul Gandhi framed the political contest as an ideological struggle, claiming that only two ideologies exist in the country: one representing division and hatred associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the BJP, and the other representing unity and love associated with the Congress party. He reiterated that the Congress would defeat Narendra Modi and Amit Shah and ultimately prevail over the BJP.

C Joseph Vijay, who has rapidly emerged as a significant political figure in Tamil Nadu, also positioned himself against the BJP during his campaign, describing it as an ideological adversary, while classifying the DMK as a political opponent rather than an ideological one. His emergence has further complicated existing alliances in the state.

The INDIA bloc, formed in 2023 as a broad coalition of opposition parties aimed at defeating the BJP in the 2024 general elections, succeeded in reducing the ruling party’s parliamentary strength but failed to secure power. Two years into the current administration’s term, the coalition now appears fragmented following the recent state election outcomes.

The Congress has suffered electoral setbacks in several states, including Assam and Puducherry, while securing a significant victory in Kerala against the Left, another constituent of the broader opposition framework at the national level. In contrast, regional parties such as the DMK and the Trinamool Congress have either suffered defeats or adopted independent political strategies.

Within Uttar Pradesh, the next major electoral battleground, the Samajwadi Party and Congress had previously achieved a stronger combined performance against the BJP in the 2024 general elections. However, recent tensions suggest a growing lack of coordination between the two parties.

As of now, the opposition bloc stands divided across multiple lines. Rahul Gandhi has asserted exclusive Congress leadership in defeating the BJP, while Akhilesh Yadav has questioned the reliability of Congress as an ally. Mamata Banerjee has called for a renewed united struggle against the central government despite her electoral defeat. The DMK has effectively declared the dissolution of the INDIA bloc in its current form. Meanwhile, Vijay’s political positioning indicates an emerging anti-BJP alignment outside traditional opposition structures.

The developments collectively point not to a unified opposition front but to a phase of realignment, where political alliances remain fluid and future configurations of opposition politics are yet to stabilise.
